Product Review: Rare Beauty

Kaycee Marshall shares her
thoughts on Selena Gomez’s new
makeup line

Rare Beauty, sold exclusively at Sephora, is a full makeup line by Selena Gomez aimed to break down unrealistic standards of perfection. Their makeup is made “to feel good in, without hiding what makes you unique—because Rare Beauty is not about being someone else but being who you are.” Rare Beauty aims to raise $100M over the next 10 years for The Rare Impact Fund, which helps people gain access to mental health services.

With the ray of positivity this new line brings to the beauty world, I had to try out the products and see if they lived up to the hype.

I ordered the "Best of Rare Beauty Lip & Cheek Mini Duo" which includes the “With Gratitude Dewy Lip Balm in Thankful”—the site describes it as a “nude mauve with a dewy finish”—and “Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in Bliss” in a nude pink with a matte finish. I fell in love with liquid blush this summer because of its light application. This blush definitely gives a more natural look with the matte finish and sheer application. It is not as pigmented as expected but works well for days when I wear less makeup. The lip balm is silky and was the perfect shade for my light skin tone.

It was very hydrating, but if you are looking for a long-lasting lip color, I would reach for the "Lip Soufflé Matte Lip Cream" instead. The Mini Duo is made for sampling the products with very small packaging and a retail price of only $15.

Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Liner” comes in matte black and retails for $19. The site describes it as “an easy-glide, waterproof liquid eyeliner with over 1,000 vegan bristles to lay down long-lasting, ultra-black lines with perfect precision every time.” I have been searching for a liquid liner to rival “KVD Vegan Beauty’s Tattoo Liner.” This is a close comparison as it is stay-proof and lasts all day. The bristles make it easy to apply and the jet-black color creates a dramatic look.

With a brand rooted in inclusion and self-acceptance, I was thrilled to find that the products lived up to my expectations. If you are looking to treat yourself with new makeup or find a gift for a makeup lover, the products I tried at Rare Beauty are worth the money. This duo is a terrific way to sample the line. If you are looking for a gift for someone with dexterity issues or a person with a disability, Rare Beauty’s packaging is made to be easier to open. I am eager to try more from this line and see how the brand grows and continues to make a positive impact.
